Timer Guidelines
The Morris County Summer Swim League and teams appreciate the time and effort you put into making these meets happen. The league runs meets solely based on watch times, so it is important that all timers follow the same guidelines to insure consistency at all meets. In order to obtain the most accurate times you will be getting wet. If you are uncomfortable or feel unable to perform the duties of a timer during league swim meets, it is recommended you talk with your head timer to find a replacement timer.

Prior to and During the Race
- When timing use your “pointer” finger to start and stop the stopwatch. This is a more accurate finger to use. -
- Prior to the race check in the swimmers by asking their name. This verifies they are in the correct lane assigned. If there is a swimmer added to your lane you will be notified by the Starter, Coach, or the Admin table. -
- Once you’ve checked in your swimmer take a step back to allow the Referee/Starter to clearly see all lanes. You will still be able to see the strobe light. - Start the watch when you see the strobe light go off on the starter system by the Referee/Starter. The light travels faster than the sound of the system. -
- Once the race has started check the watch to make sure the watch is running. If not raise your hand high and call for a backup timer to come to give you another watch. -
- When the swimmers are coming in for their final touch, step to the edge of the pool and make sure you have a clear view of the finish. As soon as any part of the swimmer’s bodies touches the wall stop your watch with your “pointer” finger. -
- During the 8/U and 9-10 backstroke events you may use a kickboard (if provided) or your hand to protect the swimmer’s head from hitting the wall. If you see the swimmer is extending their hand out for the wall let the hand touch the wall. Do not reach your arm out to stop them in the middle of the swim, let some part of their body touch the wall before stopping your watch.

After the Race has Concluded
- One timer will be the writer for the meet. The writer will be in charge of recording the times of both the timers once the race has ended or the swimmer in your lane has finished the race. -
- On the timer’s sheets please be consistent when recording your times. Writer then second timer or vice versa. This allows the Admin table to determine what watch is the issue with a stopwatch or a manual time. -
- If the swimmer did not show up for his or her race put an “NS” in the spot where you would write your times signaling, he or she did not show for the race.
